Campus Image

Sinclair Community College is the largest single campus community college in Ohio and currently enrolls over 23,000 students in hundreds of credit and non-credit courses on its downtown Dayton, Ohio campus, at 11 neighborhood centers, at 25 senior center sites, and through distance learning opportunities on commercial and cable television, audiocassette, and the Internet.

Student-Centered Learning and Development
Sinclair began in 1887 as YMCA Secretary David A. Sinclair's dream to provide a quality program of practical education for area residents. Since its inception, the institution has been a reflection of Montgomery County and its people and has played a significant role in the growth and development of the community. Sinclair has been recognized for its ongoing tradition of growth, change, development, and continued high standards of educational excellence. Its most important tradition, however, has been one of service to area residents and employers by providing realistic educational opportunities with excellence in an ever-changing, technology-oriented world.

College History

The institution that would eventually become Sinclair Community College began in 1887 when one room was set aside for an evening school in the Dayton, Ohio, YMCA. The first classes offered were arithmetic, freehand drawing, and mechanical drawing; vocational classes were added as the need arose. In 1948, the YMCA College became Sinclair College, a private two-year junior college--named for David A. Sinclair, General Secretary of the Dayton YMCA's educational program. In 1959, the College was separately incorporated as a nonprofit institution of higher learning authorized by the State Board of Education to continue to conduct a junior college curriculum and confer associate degrees in arts and science.

In 1965, the College's Board of Trustees recognized the need for a community college in Montgomery County and agreed to turn over the assets of Sinclair College to Sinclair Community College, when such an entity was created and properly supported. In June 1965, Montgomery County Commissioners created the Montgomery County Community College District. By July 1965, a Board of Trustees had been appointed and a 20-acre tract of urban renewal land in downtown Dayton had been acquired for a new campus.

In May 1966, voters demonstrated their support for the establishment of the College by their overwhelming approval of a ten-year, one mill levy for operating and capital funds. The assets of the private Sinclair College were then transferred to the public community college. In 1975, the levy was renewed for a fifteen-year period. Voters showed their support for the College again in 1989 when a 10-year, 2.5 mill levy was passed. Montgomery County voters reiterated their support for Sinclair in 1998 by passing a 10 year 2.5 mill replacement levy. Yes votes accounted for 73% of the total count.

The College has changed considerably over the years; however, it remains proud of its rich history. The last decade has seen the College emerge as a world-class learning institution, particularly in terms of the quality of its instructional facilities. Sinclair prides itself on its ability to anticipate student educational needs and establish partnerships with business and industry for the purpose of providing learning opportunities for the community.
