Impressive Heritage, Impassioned FutureMiami University, founded in 1809, approaches its 200th anniversary with a renewed commitment to the best ideals of public higher education. Miami offers nationally recognized degree programs, both undergraduate and graduate, in arts and science, business, education, engineering, and fine arts to more than 20,000 students each year on our three Ohio and one international campus. The university's strategic goals are guiding transformation of campus, curriculum and scholarly activity to meet the ever-changing needs of our students. Regularly cited as one of the top public universities in the nation, Miami is consistently praised by college guidebooks for practices leading to student success, including personal attention from faculty, participation in significant research, and opportunities for leadership. The seamless integration of academic and student affairs results in an engaging, student-centered, residential experience on the Oxford campus. Miami attracts superior students from around the country and the world. All undergraduates complete the Miami Plan for Liberal Education, a core curriculum that emphasizes critical thinking, understanding concepts, and engaging with other learners. Miami is also working toward increasing our already high studying abroad ratio from one-third to one-half of our students. The university values teaching and intense engagement of faculty with students through its teacher/scholar model. Faculty work with students in the classroom and invite students into the excitement of research and discovery to an extent not broadly available at larger research institutions. Miami's faculty are nationally prominent scholars and artists who contribute to Miami, their own disciplines, and to society by the creation of new knowledge and art. Miami has been recognized as an influential model for faculty development, with faculty support programs through the Office for the Advancement of Research and Scholarship, and The Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching. A Stimulating EnvironmentMiami's enrollment includes about 16,000 students on the Oxford campus and another 5,000 students at regional campuses in nearby Hamilton and Middletown, respectively 13 and 22 miles from Oxford. Students and faculty also learn and teach at our 40-year old Dolibois European Center in Luxembourg and will soon be doing so at our new learning center in West Chester, about 27 miles from the Oxford campus.. Faculty involve students both in the classroom and in co-curricular activities and research projects to an extent not broadly available at larger universities. In the book Creating the Future of Faculty Development: Learning from the Past, Understanding the Present, Miami is named among the top four schools nationwide as influential models for faculty development. Miami University faculty and staff received $27.5 million in 2007-2008 in external grants, contracts and technology transfer fees - the fifth year in a row for a record level of external funding. A $500 million fundraising campaign is under way to increase resources available for academic support and student scholarships. Students, faculty and staff in Oxford enjoy what is reputed to be one of the most attractive university campuses, or as poet Robert Frost described it, "the most beautiful college there is." The campus features modified Georgian revival red brick buildings on an open, tree-shaded campus void of high-rise residence halls.
An Emphasis on Student Success:Personal attention from Miami faculty and staff helps students explore their capabilities and excel. Measures of student success include the following:
