One of America's Best

Located in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, the university prepares students for lifelong learning and leadership roles in business and the professions.
It's a question that college students often hear as they near graduation: "What are you going to do when you get out into the real world?" But it's also a question that students at NSU's H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship should be well versed in answering as the school prides itself on bringing "real world" business experiences and applications into the classroom.  » READ MORE
Many drinkers do not enter treatment because of the stigma or fear of being labeled an alcoholic. Others recognize that while their drinking may not be severe enough to warrant treatment, they do have alcohol problems. To what extent, then, might it be possible to encourage individuals to change without formal outside intervention? This is the challenge accepted by two NSU clinical psychologists.  » READ MORE

"How can I face going into my teacher's classroom tomorrow? She was murdered by her own students." In an auditorium in Jonesboro, Arkansas, a Westside M.S. student asked me this question in front of several hundred people. When I began my career as a psychologist working in schools, I never expected to answer questions like the one above or to meet parents who had their children murdered at school.

Five years ago, Nova Southeastern University's Health Professions Division (HPD) launched its first nursing program to help meet the national shortage of nurses. With the support of Fred Lippman, R.Ph., Ed.D., HPD chancellor, the inaugural class of 45 students completed the R.N. (registered nurse) to B.S.N. (bachelor of science in nursing) curriculum. When the Fischler School opened its doors more than 35 years ago, the barriers of traditional learning were shattered, causing a ripple effect that can be felt today. Transformational Change in Higher Education

NSU is one of the healthiest colleges you've probably never heard of. NSU has more than 28,000 students, is the sixth largest independent university in America, and has net assets exceeding $383,000,000 including a nearly $50,000,000 endowment. However, while there aren't many academic institutions with numbers like NSU's, what has worked so well in NSU's past could undermine its future.

Serving Diverse Students

NSU is a national leader in the education of Hispanics and African-Americans. In fact, NSU has recently become a minority-majority institution, with minorities making up 50 percent of the more than 27,000 students in the Fall 2007 total enrollment. NSU's student population is 27 percent African-American, 18 percent Hispanic, and five percent Asian and other minorities.

In the 2007 edition of Diverse: Issues in Higher Education, NSU ranked as the number one producer of doctoral degrees to minority students among all nonprofit doctoral institutions nationally, according to analysis of 2005-06 data from the U.S. Department of Education. NSU also ranked first in the number of doctorates awarded to African- Americans, a distinction it has held for the last 11 consecutive years. In the rankings of number of master's degrees awarded, NSU was third in the number of master's awarded to Hispanics and fourth in the number of master's awarded to minorities.

For its role in the education of minorities, NSU was awarded in 2007 a $2.8 million Title V Developing Hispanic Serving Institution grant from the U.S. Department of Education for its Fischler School of Education & Human Services undergraduate program. The grant will supplement other programs at NSU that enhance access and affordability for minority and disadvantaged students.
